Anisa finished giving her statement to the officer and leaned into Hudson as they waited for clearance. He’d looped his arm around her waist at one point during the interview with a wink to let Anisa know it was for show. They were supposed to be boyfriend and girlfriend, so he was just selling the idea. And yet her heart couldn’t stop racing.

Why did her heart also protest at the word selling? This seemed like a good time to remind herself the two of them weren’t in an actual relationship. She also couldn’t explain why she felt so protective over Vaughn, except to say he’d kept her alive. There was clearly something going on with him and that something had to be big for all this attention they were getting. After talking it through with Hudson, questions were forming in her thoughts. In her heart of hearts, she didn’t believe Vaughn was capable of breaking the law despite the circumstances. She had to admit it was strange that he hadn’t been home considering he’d been out of the service for six months already.

Why would he avoid the ranch? His mother had been arrested for attempted murder. Wouldn’t a son race home to be by her side? Vaughn didn’t strike her as someone who didn’t care about his family. In fact, he seemed to be doing his best to lead whoever was after him away from them.

There were so many questions when it came to Vaughn. Since everything had happened so fast after he’d reached out to them, she hadn’t had a chance to respond to his text. The fact he’d sent a text and didn’t call could indicate he was on the run. Was he sending a note as fast as he could before ducking out of cell range again?

They would reply to his messages. Would he respond?

Again, the question of what he could have possibly gotten himself into popped up. Again, no answer came to mind. All she could do at this point was scratch her head until they figured it out or he handled it and explained himself.

Standing this close to Hudson, his warm woodsy and musky scent filled her senses, sending warm sensations through her body in wave after wave. Her body hummed with electricity at every point of contact with his. She wrapped her arm around him, telling herself she was just participating in the rouse, but it was so much more than that. He was grounding her and keeping her sane in a world that had shifted into chaos around her for the past several days.

She bit back a bitter laugh. That world had been chaotic for far longer than just a few days if she took into account Kevin’s accident, the cheating, T.J.’s death, and now little bean.

For the past year, Anisa had been head-down focusing on work to get through the day. The pregnancy had been a complete shock but had also forced her to put her shoulders back and think about living in the real world again.
